One of the most outward-facing and fast-moving areas of the Bank, we are at the heart of implementing both monetary and financial policy. Working closely with other areas of the Bank and our external partners, we cover a range of regular financial operations, as well as responses to unpredictable events in the markets.
Our operations underpin the financial system. We are responsible for designing, issuing, circulating and destroying banknotes. We also operate the payment systems that settle over £500 billion every day. And we maintain high-level bank accounts for central government, other central banks and some of the other key city institutions.
